Crayon Sculpture – 2020
In February of 2020, I was enrolled in 3D Design: Space + Materiality at RMCAD. For our first physical project, we were instructed to create a piece using 50 of the same objects, whatever it may be. At first, I was absolutely unsure of what to make. Using 50 pieces of an object seemed tricky, as well as expensive depending on what I decided to use. In a desperate attempt for inspiration, I went to Target one day and tried to look for anything that had a 50 pack of objects that would be easy to craft with, as well as something I could afford. That’s when I saw the 64 pack of Crayola crayons.
At first, I tried to hot glue two crayons together. I quickly learned that the crayon wax was going to melt, which almost stopped me from creating anything at all. When my professor suggested using a heat gun, I took my crayons to a table and started to melt the crayons together. After 2 hours of carefully holding crayons in place and melting them together, I had finally crafted my crayon sculpture. This project not only allowed me to understand my creative thought process, but it also taught me that some things can’t always be anticipated and expected. I never would have seen myself creating something like this before. But now that I have, I highly admire the unique structure and form of this piece. When I look at my crayon sculpture, I see elements of myself within it.
Cubism: From 2D to 3D – 2020
This was my second physical project that I made in 3D Design. We were instructed to pick out a cubism painting that we liked, then create a 3-dimensional version of said painting. Although I struggled a lot through the process of this piece, I’m very satisfied with its end result.
My difficulties when making this project included the design elements of making a flat painting into something physical and 3-dimensional. Calculating angles, mapping out pieces, and making sure that everything would fit together felt like a giant, complicated puzzle. However, through setbacks and struggles, I was determined to finish my assignments. I stayed in my school’s woodshop for 7 hours on a Saturday, cutting and sanding away at every piece I needed in order to craft my sculpture. Then came nailing everything together, followed by smoothing out the nail markings with wood putty. Finally, I was able to paint my sculpture and call it a finished product.
Toy Chest – Coming soon!
Toy Chest is the first official album I plan to release in the near future. I’ve been working on this album for almost two years, and it’s a project that means the world to me.
The songs in Toy Chest are intended to be rock songs. Each song title also correlates to the over all theme of the album – betrayal, emotions, and toys. I chose the toy theme because of my admiration for all things soft, cute, and cuddly. This is also seen in a lot of my art, so I wanted to keep that aesthetic ongoing in my music.
Toy Chest is an album that focuses on a feeling of loneliness and the experiences I’ve had in the past where I’ve been used and taken advantage of for my kindness. Toy Chest also focuses on the perspective that I view myself in, for better or worse. In order to combat against the negative emotions I’ve felt, and to heal from the past, I’ve decided to embody it all into this upcoming album.
